Christian Hip Hop: A History from Bible Break to Billboard

Christian hip hop has been around almost as long as hip hop itself. It started with a handful of church kids and street preachers in the 1980s, survived years of being ignored by both the rap world and the church, and eventually put a Christian rap album at No. 1 in the country. This is how it happened.

The short answer

Christian hip hop, also called Christian rap, holy hip hop or gospel rap, began in the early 1980s. Stephen Wiley's 1985 album Bible Break is widely seen as the first notable Christian rap album. The genre grew through labels like Gotee and Reach Records, and in 2014 Lecrae's Anomaly became the first album to top the Billboard 200 and the Gospel chart at the same time.

The first Christian rap records (1982 to 1989)

Ask who made the first Christian rap song and you'll get two answers, and both are right in their own way. In 1982 a New York rapper named Pete Harrison, recording as McSweet, released The Gospel Beat: Jesus-Christ. It's usually cited as the first commercially released Christian rap record, though little is known about how widely it was heard.

The record most Christian rappers point to is Stephen Wiley's Bible Break from 1985. It was a full album, released on a Christian label, and its title track became a Christian radio hit in 1986. By today's standards it's gentle, almost a Bible lesson over a beat, but it proved the idea could work.

A wave followed. Michael Peace released Rrrock It Right in 1987. In Los Angeles, a crew called JC and the Boys produced S.F.C. (Soldiers for Christ), whose Fully Armed came out the same year. In Dallas, P.I.D. (Preachers in Disguise) performed in clergy collars with a street style borrowed from Run-DMC. And in 1989 three friends from Liberty University released their first album as dc Talk. They would later move toward rock, and their 1995 album Jesus Freak is still one of the best-known Christian rock records ever made.

The 1990s: Gospel Gangstaz, Cross Movement and the first labels

For most of the 80s, Christian rap had no real home. Christian bookstores didn't know what to do with it, and the hip hop world mostly ignored it. That started to change in the 90s, when artists began building their own institutions.

In 1993 Knolly Williams started Grapetree Records, the first label devoted only to Christian hip hop. In 1994 Toby McKeehan of dc Talk, now known as TobyMac, co-founded Gotee Records with Todd Collins and Joey Elwood. Gotee signed the duo GRITS, who became one of the most respected acts in the genre.

The music got harder and more honest. Gospel Gangstaz, a group from Compton whose members had been in the Crips and Bloods, released Gang Affiliated in 1994. Some Christian stores refused to carry it because of its street language, and it's now ranked among the most important Christian hip hop albums ever made. In Philadelphia, the Cross Movement, led by The Ambassador and Phanatik, paired hard-hitting beats with deep theology and influenced the generation that followed.

Gospel music was feeling the change too. Kirk Franklin's 1997 hit Stomp built a gospel choir record on a funk sample and a hip hop beat, and it crossed over to secular radio. Hear it on the gospel songs list.

Reach Records and the 116 Clique

The label that would carry Christian hip hop to the mainstream started small. In 2004 a young Houston rapper named Lecrae and his friend Ben Washer founded Reach Records. Reach built a roster that included Trip Lee, Tedashii, KB and later Andy Mineo. Together the artists recorded as the 116 Clique, named after Romans 1:16: "I am not ashamed of the gospel."

Reach's sound was built to stand next to anything on secular rap radio. Lecrae's 2012 album Gravity debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, the biggest sales week a Christian hip hop album had ever had. In February 2013 it won the Grammy for Best Gospel Album, and Lecrae is widely reported as the first hip hop artist to win that award.

Anomaly and the mainstream breakthrough

On September 9, 2014, Lecrae released Anomaly. It sold about 88,000 copies in its first week and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the first album ever to top the Billboard 200 and Billboard's Gospel chart at the same time. A Christian rap album had beaten every other album in America that week.

The years that followed blurred the line between Christian rap and rap by Christians. NF, a Christian who avoids the Christian rap label, took his album Perception to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2017. Chance the Rapper filled his music with gospel choirs. In 2019 Kanye West released Jesus Is King, an openly Christian album that grew out of his Sunday Service performances. Meanwhile artists like Andy Mineo, KB, Social Club Misfits and nobigdyl. kept building audiences inside and outside the church.

Christian hip hop in the 2020s

A new generation, including Hulvey, GAWVI, Caleb Gordon and Miles Minnick, grew up with Christian rap as a normal part of the music world and built audiences on streaming and social media. In December 2024, Rolling Loud Miami, one of the biggest hip hop festivals in the world, hosted its first dedicated Christian rap set, with GAWVI, Alex Jean, Caleb Gordon, Jon Keith, nobigdyl. and Hulvey. In March 2025 Miles Minnick became the first solo Christian hip hop artist to play his own set at Rolling Loud.

Forty years after Bible Break, Christian hip hop is no longer an oddity, and it has earned its own chapter in the history of Christian music. It's a full genre with its own labels, festivals, radio and charts. Start with the Christian rap songs list, where every song comes with the scripture behind it and a way to listen.

What makes it Christian hip hop?

There is no official rule. Generally, Christian hip hop is rap made by Christians whose lyrics openly center on faith, usually released through Christian labels or played on Christian radio. Some artists embrace the label, some reject it because it limits their audience, and some, like NF, simply make music as Christians without calling it Christian rap. Fans and artists use several names for it: Christian rap, holy hip hop, gospel rap and Christian hip hop all describe the same broad world.
